As I write these words [in 1996], the Web consists mainly of 14 million interlinked
home pages created by college students wishing to tell the world what they look like,
how they feel about various rock bands, what snack foods they eat, whether they
prefer briefs or boxers, etc. This is of course vital information, but it only begins to tap
the vast potential of the Web to enhance our lives, by which I mean sell us stuff.
