I can feel the grass grow through the soles of my feet.
I can feel the roots rip when I shamble toward meat
As slow rotting muscle tugs sinew and bone.
There’s a dim sense of pain in the zombie’s low moan.
A man’s beating heart is revealed when it drains.
It’s more tasty than kidneys, though less so than brains.
In the evening he’ll rise from the grave where he lays
Like the stuff of your nightmares and cheap matinees.
I walk with the zombies that snarl and moan.
We’ll devour your brain if we catch you alone
Or we’ll just take your hand and your forearm as well
And leave you to bleed in the dirt where you fell.
Oh teach me to move at a slow jerky pace.
Teach me to somehow catch up in the chase.
The undead I’ve become and exist without breath
In the horror of mindlessness, grayness, and death.
