A travesty of Wings by Catherine Faber. Cf. Crossed Over.
In an alley, hidden from the light,
She had a better life once, you can bet.
In fact, she once possessed the power of flight,
Until low self-esteem made her forget.
It was from an exalted height she fell,
But she wears a ragged coat so you can't tell.
«Chorus:
| Chorus: |
With her wings tucked underneath her coat, She walks the grimy ground. With her wings tucked underneath her coat, She is sidewalk bound. |
At nighttime in a doorway, she curls up in a sack,
With her cheek against the pavement, and her nose stuck in a crack,
For it's awfully awkward for the gal to sleep upon her back
With her wings tucked underneath her coat.
«Chorus
»
She sometimes turns to alcohol and drugs,
And parties in a seedy part of town.
She spreads her arms and offers drunken hugs
Until she's had too much and fallen down.
She often wakes up in a stranger's bed,
For there's just one pair of limbs she will not spread.
«Chorus
»
I never have experienced a quandary like this:
Don't know if I should play along and try to steal a kiss,
Or tap her on the shoulder, and just say, "Excuse me, Miss.
You've got your wings tucked underneath your coat."
«Chorus
»
One day someone called out to her. He was in a passing car.
He said "Are you an angel, mutant bird, or from a star?
Now how the hell are we supposed to know just what you are
With your wings tucked underneath your coat?"
«Chorus
